What does a Fire Watch do?
A frequently asked question is; what does a Fire Watch do? A Fire Guard provides performs preventive supervision during high-risk operations and fire hazards and is commonly employed in yacht building, ship repair, tank storage, chemicals and petrochemicals, waste processing, steel and energy. The main task is preventive supervision, or incident prevention. For example, by checking personal protective equipment (PPE) and whether safety regulations are being followed. In incidents, he or she intervenes quickly and competently and provides first aid when necessary. An Fire Watch is not a firefighter, but is trained and experienced in fighting an incipient fire, evacuating a building and providing first aid.
Tasks and responsibilities
As a certified Fire Watch, you will unburden the client by monitoring, ensuring and possibly improving safety at workplaces. You perform checks, identify unsafe situations and take preventive action where necessary to ensure safety. For example, by checking work permits, personal protective equipment (PPE) and performing gas measurements in confined spaces. In addition, you know exactly what to do during an emergency. As a Fire Watch, you will make sure everyone gets back home safely under your supervision.
- Monitoring compliance with deployed fire prevention equipment as stated in the work permit;

- Performance of gas measurements (if authorised) for toxic substances, oxygen content and explosive mixtures;
- Conducting inspection rounds for fire prevention purposes;

Want to become a Fire Watch?
Within RBC, there are State-Certified and Industrial Fire Watches. At a minimum, a State-Certified Fire Watch has served an internship with a fire brigade and is trained in firefighting, hazardous materials incidents and emergency response.
To become an Industrial Fire Watch, you need to be trained as a Fire Watch. During this training, you will be taught a wide range of knowledge and skills. including on fire and occupational safety, working safely in confined spaces, first aid, fire fighting, evacuation and gas measurement. The training lasts about two weeks and consists of a practical part and a theory part, which we provide at our location in Rotterdam. The training is delivered by an experienced professional and tested by an independent testing agency. With this, we guarantee the quality of your degree.
