Smoke detectors mandatory in existing buildings from 1 July 2022

For new buildings, smoke detectors must be installed on every floor where people live as of 1 July 2022. Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) Raymond Knops wants this obligation to also apply to existing buildings. The proposal to enshrine this in building regulations has now gone into internet consultation. With this, the minister is fulfilling the advice of fire brigades, municipalities, property owners and the building industry to make smoke detectors compulsory for all homes.

Minister Knops: “Most fire casualties are caused by smoke inhalation. Smoke detectors thus save lives. TNO research last year showed that smoke detectors in all homes reduce the risk of fatalities. That is why I want to amend the Building Code on this point and make smoke detectors mandatory not only for new buildings but also for existing ones.”

Entry into force

To give building owners enough time to implement these measures in all existing homes, this obligation will not take effect until 1 July 2022. It also prevents problems in the supply and availability of smoke detectors from suppliers.
